Discover your Downey

In 2014, the City of Downey began to experience an awakening. What was once a quiet, sleepy suburb, began to emerge as a destination city within Southeast Los Angeles.

The City of Downey hired a consulting group to provide an analysis of its standing with residents, businesses and neighboring communities. The final report included a recommendation for a unifying brand identity statement – Experience Downey. Although the report was well received, the city council felt that the proposed brand identity needed work.

At the time, I was co-founder and creative director of Stay Gallery and Stay Studio. City officials reached out to my team and I to propose a new identity. We collaborated with city council members, city staff and community stakeholders in identifying the key values and highlights of our community to develop a strong brand and visual identity.

Six months later, we revealed a completed brand identity for the City of Downey and a campaign to coincide with it – Discover Downey.

Discover Downey is a community development initiative meant to effectively promote Downey as a unique place to live, work, and play by centralizing community-wide events, attractions, shopping & dining options.

After completing the design of the visual identity, I worked with the city’s engineers to integrate the new identity into the city’s infrastructure.
